Noch einmal eine englische Short Story? Ja klar, weil sie von Jonathan Hunter geschrieben ist. Und er hat mich wie bei der anderen Short Story wieder einmal umgehauen. Aufgrunddessen, dass es Englisch ist, wird es wie letztes Mal eine englische Rezension geben. Ich mag diesen Autor total; nicht nur, weil er als Mensch total lieb und witzig ist, sondern auch, weil er ein kleines Schreibgenie. Also danke an ihn, dass er mir das ebook von dieser Kurzgeschichte noch einmal zur Verfügung gestellt hat.

Worum geht's?
König Alfred ist verschwunden. Während der Rest des Königreichs versucht nicht auseinanderzubrechen, bedroht ein Serienmörder die Ländereien der Familie Vane.
Meine Meinung
Ja, was soll ich sagen... Ich liebe den Schreibstil von Jonathan Hunter: er ist unglaublich packend und fesselnd. Diese Geschichte war genau so gut wie seine andere Kurzgeschichte The First Gate. Die Geschichte war unglaublich spannend, auch, wenn es dieses Mal weniger Fantasy-Elemente dabei hatte. Aber das hat mich gar nicht gestört, denn diese Geschichte war auch so spannend genug.
Es hat mich sehr erstaunt, wie gut der Autor aus der Sicht einer Frau schreiben kann - denn ganz ehrlich, sowas können wirklich nur gute Autoren. Ich habe nicht erwartet, dass er das so gut kann; immerhin wird ja immer gesagt, dass Männer uns Frauen nicht verstehen. Ich wurde hier eindeutig eines Besseren belehrt. Ich habe die Protagonistin Alex und deren Mann, Highlord Paul, wirklich sehr gemocht. Alex, weil sie so eine starke Frau ist und sich von nichts unterkriegen lässt. Paul, weil er ein gerechter und gütiger Herrscher ist und auch eine sensible Seite hat, auch, wenn er diese nur gegenüber seiner Frau zeigt. Die beiden folgen einer Spur, um die misteriösen Morde auf ihren Ländereien aufzuklären, wobei die Aufklärung diesern Serienmorde sich als schwierig erweist. Denn ein Zirkus ist auf den Ländereien und bringt immer mehr Verdächtitgen ins Spiel.
Diese Kurzgeschichte ist sehr unterhaltsam zu lesen, vor allem mag ich diese Mystery, Horror und Krimi Elemente. Es schliesst an dieses düstere und mysteriöse Setting dieser Welt an, welche ich schon in der letzten Kurzgeschichte kennenlernen durfte. Was ich genau wie bei der anderen Kurzgeschgichte besonders mag, ist die kleine Anzahl an Charakteren, die man kennenlernt und so auch viel einfacher eine emotionale Bindung aufbauen kann.
Hier muss ich kurz eine Szene erwähnen, die mir besonders gut gefallen hat (Achtung Spoiler!): Als Paul und Alex kurz eine Verschnaufspause bekommen und ein bisschen mit den Zirkusleuten feiern, tanzen sie beide zusammen. Und so wie die Szene beschrieben wurde, hatte ich so ein richtiges "Rapunzel-neu-verföhnt-Feeling". Diese Szene war einfach wunderschön geschrieben.
Ich muss euch aber vorwarnen: Diese Geschichte geht nicht so aus, wie man es erwartet. Die Geschichte nimmt auf den letzten Seiten eine unglaubliche Wendung und hat mich auf jeden Fall total perplex zurückgelassen. Am Ende war ich nur so: what? Nein, das ist jetzt nicht passiert, oder? Und ich kann versichern: Das Geheimnis um den Mörder bleibt bis am Ende aufrechterhalten und macht es umso spannender.
Ich kann nur sagen: ich bin wieder einmal geflasht von der Genialität dieses Autors! Lest unbedingt seine Geschichten, wenn ihr Fantasy mögt.

Again I'm writing an english review. Why? Because I have read again an english short story from Jonathan Hunter. This time it's all about the short story "The Circus". And again Jonathan Hunter did a great job! I like him really much - not only because he's a nice and funny guy but also because he's an excellent writer. So thank you Jonathan for giving me the oppotunity to read your newest short story!
PS: I hope my english isn't so bad! If it is: I'm sorry!
Spotted: The Circus - a murderous story!
Content: What is it all about?
King Alfred has disappeared. As the rest of the kingdom tries to hold itself together a serial killer starts threatening the lands of the Vane family.
My opinion
So where should I start...? I just love Jonathan's writing skills: He is freaking talented! It makes the story really intense and captivating. And I have to say: This story is as good as the other one I have read from this author. Even though this short story doesn't have that much fantasy elements, it's still really fascinating and captiving.
What surprised me was the way how the story is told: It's told from the point of view of a woman. I didn't expected it to be so well written, because for an author it really is difficult to write from the point of view from the opposite sex. But Jonathan did it well even though we say that men never understand women. I was taught better. I really loved the protagonist Alex and Paul, the Highlord. I like Alex because she was shown as a strong, loving and smart woman. And I like Paul because he's a strong and righteous Lord but also because he can be kind and gentle. Both are following the misterious traces of the murders on their lands but solving those murders is more difficult than they thoght. A circus has arrived on their lands and it brings even more suspects.
This short story is really entertaining and I love those mystery, horror and crime elements. It's the same setting that we get to know in the other short story "The First gate" from the author. But what I like about "The Circus" is the small amount of characters we get to know and in this case it's easier for the reader to make an emotional bond.
Here I have to mention a little scene I really loved in this story (SPOILER!): When Alex and Paul finally could rest a bit they were partying a bit with the persons of the circus. and then Alex and Paul started dancing together and the crowd startet clapping. This scene gave me a little "Tangled"-moment. I just loved how the scene was written.
I just have to warn you here: this story is not going to end as you are probably expecting. At the end we get an unexpected. I was shook and left me baffled behind. At the end of the story I was again looking at my phone and could only say: what the hell did just happen here?
I can assure you: the secret about the murderer remains until the end - what it makes it even more captivating!
At the end I'm only saying this: Jonathan is a genius! Please read one of his stories, he's such an underrated author.
